This week has been designated National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. Across the country, National Weather Service offices are promoting lightning awareness by issuing Public Information Statements and playing special safety information on NOAA Weather Radio. The Fourth of July holiday is fast approaching, a time when people are outdoors at picnics, at the lake, playing baseball, and attending parades and fireworks displays. Many lightning fatalities and injuries occur this time of year, which is one reason why late June is chosen as a time to promote lightning safety nationally. The National Weather Service has excellent information on lightning awareness, and everyone is encouraged to visit the site. Topics include the science of lightning, indoor and outdoor safety, the history of lightning, statistics of being killed or injured by lightning and what type of injuries occur with lightning strike victims.
