Commissioners Notes

THE BUDGET AMENDMENT AND THE UPDATE ON THE ROAD DEPARTMENT WERE ITEMS FOR THE NORTON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AT THEIR MONTH END MEETING LAST FRIDAY.  JOHN MAPES FROM MAPES AND MILLER PRESENTED THE AMENDED BUDGET HEARING FOR NORTON COUNTY.  THEY ADDRESSED THE VARIOUS BUDGETS THAT WERE AMENDED AND THERE WERE NO PUBLIC COMMENTS SO THE AMENDED BUDGET WAS APPROVED.  SANDY SMITH FROM THE ROAD AND BRIDGE DEPARTMENT REPORTED SHE IS WORKING ON A YEARLY REPORT FOR THE DEPARTMENT.  THE INMATE WORK CREW HAS BEEN WORKING AT THE COUNTY SHOP TO SO SOME WORK IN THE CEILING AREA.  THERE IS AN AREA ABOVE THE CEILING THAT COLLECTS MOISTURE DUE TO THE HEAT BELOW.  THERE WAS ALSO DISCUSSION ON THE BIDS FOR THE HEATING SYSTEM AT THE SHOP.  SHE WILL CONTACT THE BIDDERS TO SEE IF THEY WILL EXTEND THE BIDS TILL AFTER JANUARY FIRST.  THE ROAD CREWS ARE WORKING IN THE SAND PIT TO REMOVE THE OVERBURDEN AND PREPARING TO MORE INTO DISTRICT ONE TO DO FIVE MAINTENANCE JOBS DUE TO WATER DRAINAGE.  THERE ARE OTHER AREAS THAT NEED TUBES, BUT MATERIALS WILL BE NEEDED FIRST.  NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR SCOTT SPROUL PRESENTED THE BID FROM SCHWAB EATON FOR THE AG VALLEY ROAD PROJECT EAST OF NORTON.  THE TOTAL COST WILL BE 212,600.  ADDITIONAL FUNDING MAY BE NEEDED IF LEGAL DESCRIPTIONS AND RIGHT OF WAY ACQUISITION IS REQUIRED.  THE COMMISSION WILL DISCUSS THE CONTRACT AND TAKE ACTION THIS MONTH.  THE COMMISSION RE-APPOINTED SHAD CHANDLER TO THE HOSPITAL BOARD AND APPOINTED JILL DIANE EDGETT TO REPLACE JENNIE GOLDSBY WHO DID NOT RE-APPLY.  SOLID WASTE SUPERVISOR CURT ARCHIBALD PRESENTED AN UPDATE ON THE EQUIPMENT REPAIRS AND THE ESTIMATED DOWN TIME FOR THE REPAIRS.  WHITNEY CONSTRUCTION GAVE ARCHIBALD AN ESTIMATE OF THE COST FOR THE TWO CELLS THAT ARE ON SCHEDULE, BUT WILL HAVE A MORE FIRM ESTIMATE LATER.  THE COUNTY WILL HAVE ENOUGH SPACE TO EXPAND THE NEXT TWO CELLS THROUGH 2014, AFTER THIS A NEW CELL WILL NEED TO BE OPENED.  THEY ALSO ADDRESSED THE REDUCED COSTS FOR FIVE HOME FOR CITIES IN THE COUNTY.  THE COMMISSION FELT THIS WAS VERY WORTH WHILE.  ARCHIBALD DISCUSSED THE HIRING OF AN EMPLOYEE SINCE ONE OF HIS WILL BE MOVING TO THE ROAD DEPARTMENT.    HE WILL REVIEW THE APPLICATIONS RECEIVED FOR THE ROAD POSITION.  THERE BEING NO FURTHER BUSINESS, THE COMMISSIONERS ADJOURNED LAST MONDAY.  THESE MINUTES ARE NOT OFFICIAL UNTIL SIGNED AND APPROVED BY THE NORTON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AT THEIR NEXT REGULAR MEETING MONDAY.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
