USD 211 Norton School Board Notes

THE UPDATE ON CAPITAL OUTLAY PROJECTS AND THE CURRICULUM UPDATE WERE ITEMS FOR THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION LAST NIGHT.   THE BOARD RANKED THE PROJECTS THAT WERE PRESENTED AT THE LAST MEETING.  AFTER DISCUSSION, THE BOARD APPROVED GOING AHEAD WITH NEW PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT AT EISENHOWER, SANDING AND REFINISHING THE JUNIOR HIGH GYM FLOOR AND CARPETING FOR THE MAIN HALLWAYS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.  SUPERINTENDENT GREG MANN WAS ASKED TO GET QUOTES FOR A NEW INTERCOM/CLOCK SYSTEM.  ALSO, THE BOAR RECEIVED A PRESENTATION ON DNA FROM THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT.  PRINCIPAL COREY ROY PRESENTED THE 2012 SUMMER SCHOOL PROPOSAL.  IT WILL BE THE SAME AS LAST YEAR WITH TWO WEEKS JUST AFTER SCHOOL IS OUT AND THEN TWO WEEKS BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS IN AUGUST.  THEY APPROVED ADDING ADVANCED CABINET MAKING TO THE FINE ARTS REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION.  THE COMMON CORE TRANSITION PLAN WAS ACCEPTED.  THE BOARD ACCEPTED THE CALENDAR FOR NEXT YEAR.  SCHOOL WILL START AUGUST 17TH AND DISMISS AT ONE THAT FRIDAY.  THE LAST DAY FOR STUDENTS WILL BE MAY 23RD.  THE CALENDAR INCLUDES 11 DAYS OF DISMISSAL AT ONE FOR MTSS COLLABORATION AND COMMON CORE TRANSITION.  THE FINANCIAL AUDIT FOR THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30TH OF 2011 WAS ACCEPTED FROM MAPES AND MILLER.  The NEW FIRE MARSHALL WAS IN NORTON YESTERDAY AND THERE ARE SEVERAL AREAS THAT WILL NEED UPDATING LIKE FIRE PULL STATIONS, EXIT LIGHTS THAT ARE OUT AND OTHERS, BUT NOTHING MAJOR.  FOR THE ENROLLMENT PACKETS THIS SUMMER, THE DISTRICT WILL SEND POSTCARDS TO PATRONS TO LET THEM KNOW THEY ARE AVAILABLE.  WITH THE BULK RATE PERMIT, THE PACKETS WOULD HAVE TO be taken TO WICHITA AND THEN the postal service will RETURN them TO HAYS THEN BACK TO NORTON.  THE BOARD WILL REVIEW FOR A MONTH THE IDEA OF PURCHASING I PADS FOR THE BOARD MEMBERS SO THEY CAN GO PAPERLESS FOR BOARD MEETINGS.  THE BOARD SET A SPECIAL MEETING NEXT WEDNESDAY THE 22ND TO DISCUSS QUESTIONS FOR THE DOCKING SURVEY AND TO SET UP FOR THE STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION.  THE BOARD APPROVED THE PURCHASE OF AEDS FOR THE DISTRICT, ONE FOR THE STULL GYM LOBBY, ONE AT THE EAST CAMPUS LOBBY, ONE AT EACH OF THE EISENHOWER AND JUNIOR/SENIOR HIGH CAFETERIA.  THEY WILL ALSO BE PURCHASING ALARMED WALL CABINETS.  THE HIGH SCHOOL KAYS AND FCCLA AND THE JUNIOR HIGH KAYS AND STUCO WILL BE HELPING TO PURCHASE THE UNITS.  THE BOARD ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF PRISCILLA KENDALL AS THE ASSISTANT COOK IN THE JUNIOR/SENIOR HIGH AND APPROVED DIANE MONTOIA TO TAKE HER PLACE.  THE NEXT MEETING OF THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL BE MONDAY MARCH 12TH AT 7:30 IN THE BOARD ROOM OF THE UNIFIED OFFICE.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
