School Board Notes

THE REVISED CLASS SCHEDULE FOR THE NORTON JUNIOR HIGH AND THE COST FOR DRIVER’S ED WERE ITEMS FOR the USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION LAST NIGHT.  WITH THE MTSS COMING NEXT YEAR, THERE WILL BE TRAINING THAT WILL BE NEEDED FREQUENTLY.  THE PROPOSAL IS TO CHANGE THE ACTIVITY PERIOD FOR THE JUNIOR HIGH THE AFTERNOON TO THE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING.  THAT WILL ALLOW FOR MEETINGS AND THE MTSS TRAINING TO BE DONE FIRST THING IN THE DAY.  THE JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE GOING TO ABOUT AN HOUR EARLIER.  THE LUNCH HOURS FOR THE JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH WILL ONLY OVERLAP A COUPLE OF MINUTES.  WITH THE SMALL NUMBER OF STUDENTS in the JUNIOR HIGH NEXT YEAR, SOME OF THE TEACHERS MAY BE HELPING OUT IN THE SENIOR HIGH.  THE BOARD WILL STUDY THE PROPOSAL FOR A MONTH AND ACT ON IT AT THE APRIL MEETING.  ALSO LAST NIGHT, THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FEES FOR SUMMER DRIVER’S ED.  THEY APPROVED KEEPING THE RATES THE SAME WITH 75 DOLLARS FOR THE IN DISTRICT STUDENTS AND 125 FOR OUT OF DISTRICT IF THERE IS ROOM.  THERE IS MONEY IN THE BUDGET TO COVER THE SHORTFALL.  IN OTHER BUSINESS, THE BOARD ACCEPTED THE BID FROM VON LINTEL REFINISHING AND FLOORING OF HAYS FOR the JUNIOR HIGH GYM FLOOR.  THEY WILL REMOVE THE EXISTING SURFACE AND THE APPLY PRIMER AND SEALER TO PROLONG THE LIFE.  THEY WILL ALSO CUT OFF ABOUT TWO INCHES ON THE EDGES SO THE FLOOR HAS ROOM IF IT EXPANDS.  THE BID ALSO INCLUDES THE TWO NEW BRASS VOLLEYBALL PLATES ON THE FLOOR.  THE BOARD received A BID FOR THE JUNIOR/SENIOR HIGH INTERCOM SYSTEM AND WIRELESS CLOCKS YESTERDAY.  THE BOARD ACCEPTED the BID AND AUTHORIZED SUPERINTENDENT GREG MANN TO CONTACT THE COMPANY AND GET QUOTES FOR THE EISENHOWER SYSTEM AND PURCHASE IT, IF IT DOES NOT COST MORE THAN DOUBLE THE AMOUNT FOR THE JUNIOR/SENIOR HIGH.  SEVERAL OF THE BIDS HAVE COME IN ABOUT 30 THOUSAND DOLLARS UNDER ESTIMATE.  SOME ON THE LIST WILL BE DONE AS SUMMER MAINTENANCE.  SUPERINTENDENT MANN ALSO PRESENTED AN ARCHITECT’S DRAWING OF A POSSIBLE PARKING LOT ON THE SOUTH END OF EISENHOWER SCHOOL TO HELP WITH THE PARKING CONGESTION AFTER SCHOOL.  HE REVISED ACTIVITY POLICY WAS APPROVED AS PRESENTED WITH STEVE BERRY VOTING NO.  IT INCLUDES A CLARIFICATION OF THE PENALTY FOR HAVING, USING, OR SELLING CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES.  THE BOARD APPROVED the PURCHASE OF 7 REFURBISHED I-PAD TWOS FOR THE BOARD TO GO PAPERLESS.  THEY SHOULD BE IN IN JUNE.  THE GROUP THAT WILL GO OVER THE RESULTS OF THE DOCKING SURVEY WILL BE ONE FROM EACH SITE COUNCIL, ONE FROM EACH BUILDING AND FIVE FROM THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS THE SUPERINTENDENT AND THE BOARD.  The USD 211 TECHNOLOGY PLAN THAT WAS PRESENTED LAST MONTH WAS APPROVED.  IT MUST BE ON FILE SO THE DISTRICT CAN QUALIFY FOR THE E-RATE DISCOUNT PROGRAM.  The EISENHOWER SUMMER SCHOOL PLAN THAT WAS PRESENTED LAST MONTH WAS APPROVED.  THERE WILL BE TWO WEEKS IN JUNE AND TWO WEEKS IN AUGUST.  THE BOARD DECLARED 24 EXTRA COMPUTERS AS SURPLUS AND WILL OFFER THEM FOR SALE.  THEY ARE OLD MACS THAT ARE NOT UPGRADEABLE.  NEW LAPTOPS COMING IN WILL REPLACE THEM.  ENERGY 360 WILL BE GIVING A DEMONSTRATION ON HOW TO RUN THE COMPUTERIZED HVAC SYSTEM FOR THE DISTRICT.  THE BOARD ACCEPTED WITH THANKS FOR HIS 23 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE MUSIC AND BAND PROGRAM AT THE HIGH SCHOOL THE RETIREMENT OF DAVID WILL.  THEY ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF KEVIN JILKA AS THE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH AND JENNI PATTERSON AS THE ASSISTANT JUNIOR HIGH CHEER SPONSOR.  THEY OFFERED CONTRACTS TO DANNA MADDEN, KIM FISCUS, GAIL ROY AND TERESA SCHULtze AS THE SUMMER SCHOOL STAFF AND TO DONNA THOMAS AS THE ASSISTANT LIBRARY AIDE.  THE NEXT MEETING OF THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL BE MONDAY APRIL 9th  AT 7:30 in the BOARD ROOM OF THE UNIFIED OFFICE.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
