Economic Development Board Notes

THE UPDATE ON THE NURSING SCHOOL AND THE E-COMMUNITY WERE ITEMS FOR THE NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD LAST NIGHT.  THE DRYWALL IS UP AND THEY ARE WORKING TO GET IT READY FOR PAINTING.  COLBY COMMUNITY COLLEGE HAS BEEN APPROVED TO OFFER NIGHT CLASSES AS WELL.  THAT COULD INCREASE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS TO 50 WITH NIGHT CLASSES.  THEY ALSO INTEND TO MOVE THE CLASSES BEING HELD AT THE JUNIOR HIGH FOR CCC TO THAT BUILDING WHEN DONE.  THERE WILL BE SOME GENERAL EDUCATION CLASSES BEING OFFERED AS WELL AS OTHER COURSES THAT ARE BEING WORKED ON.  THE APPLICATIONS ARE READY FOR THE E-COMMUNITY LOANS AND THE FIRST ONE HAS GONE OUT.  DIRECTOR SCOTT SPROUL EXPECTS TWO TO THREE MORE BEING PICKED UP.  THE LEADERSHIP TEAM WILL REVIEW THE APPLICATIONS THEN SEND THEM TO THE FINANCIAL REVIEW BOARD.  THERE WILL BE TWO BOARD MEMBERS FROM THE LEADERSHIP TEAM ON THE FINANCIAL REVIEW BOARD.  NORTHWEST KANSAS PLANNING IS READY TO HELP WITH THE PROGRAM.  THE LOAN DOCUMENTS ARE STILL WITH THE COUNTY ATTORNEY.  ALSO, HOUSING WAS ADDRESSED LAST NIGHT.  RANDY HRABE FROM THE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT MET WITH SPROUL AND THEY LOOKED AT HOUSING OPTIONS FOR NORTON.  THERE HOUSING MARKET STUDY WAS DONE LAST IN 1999.    CAROLYN POPP FROM HILL CITY OFFERED TO SHADOW ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TO LEARN MORE.  THE BOARD APPROVED HER WORKING ON THE HOUSING INFORMATION TOOL THAT WAS TAKEN FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE WEBSITE.   SHE WILL BE DOING IT FOR FREE AND MAY TAKE A MONTH.  SPROUL AND ASSISTANT VERLA GRYSCH WERE ASKED TO MEET WITH CITY OFFICIALS ABOUT THE HOUSING OPTIONS AND SOME OF THE HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS IN NORTON.  SPROUL WILL BE ATTENDING THE YOUTH RETENTION AND K-STATE LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP TOMORROW IN GREAT BEND.  NORTON IS HOSTING A FINANCIAL RESOURCES MEETING APRIL FOURTH AT THE SLEEP INN.  IT WILL BE A LUNCH PROGRAM WITH LOAN OFFICERS FROM THE BANKS INVITED AS WELL AS CPAS AND THOSE WORKING WITH FINANCES TO HELP NEW AND EXISTING BUSINESSES.  THE SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CLASSES ARE TOMORROW AND FRIDAY AT THE LIBRARY COMMUNITY ROOM.  THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MET WITH NEX-TECH ABOUT AN UPDATE ON THE DISCOVERNORTON.COM WEBSITE.  THEY HAVE A NEW ONE THAT WILL BE COMING THAT WILL BE MORE USER FRIENDLY AND EASIER TO WORK WITH.  THERE IS ALSO A WEBSITE GROUP IN GRAINFIELD.   THE COST FOR THE NEX-TECH SITE WOULD GO DOWN TO 79 DOLLARS PER MONTH.  THE FINAL DECISION WILL WAIT UNTIL THE NEW CHAMBER DIRECTOR IS ON BOARD AND CAN SEE THE PRESENTATION.  THE CHAMBER AND TRAVEL AND TOURISM SHARE THAT EXPENSE WITH ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.  THE NEXT MEETING OF THE NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD WILL BE TUESDAY APRIL 10TH AT 5:30 IN THE OFFICE AT 205 SOUTH STATE STREET.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
