School Board Special Meeting Notes

THE RESULTS OF THE FACILITIES SURVEY AND PERSONNEL ITEMS WERE DISCUSSED DURING THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION FRIDAY AND SATURDAY.  GARY BRINKER AND MIKE WALKER FROM THE DOCKING INSTITUTE AT FORT HAYS PRESENTED THE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY.  THEY LEAD THE GROUP WITH A GOAL SETTING AND BRAIN STORMING EXERCISE DEALING WITH THE STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES, OPPORTUNITIES AND THE THREATS IDENTIFIED BY THE GROUP.  SOME OF THE GENERAL GOALS WERE PROVIDE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION TO ANY WHO REQUEST IT. HAVE SAFE ROOMS AT EACH SCHOOL FOR PROTECTION FROM STORMS.  ASSESS POTENTIAL FOR FURTHER DISTRICT OFFICES.  BUILD NEEDED BUILDING AND/OR CLASSROOMS.  RE-VALUATE THE PLAN FOR FACILITY NEEDS AND UPGRADES.  MODERNIZE/RENOVATE EXISTING BUILDINGS.  SECURITY UPGRADES WITH BETTER LOCKS.  INVESTIGATE WAYS TO COLLABORATE WITH OTHER NORTON COUNTY TAXING AGENCIES AND FIND ENDOWMENT/ALUMNI AND OTHER NON-TRADITIONAL SOURCES OF FUNDING.  EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT FUNDING OF SCHOOLS.  THEN FRIDAY NIGHT, THEY BOARD ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF LIDA SHARP AS THE JUNIOR HIGH MATH TEACHER, NICOLE SATRAN AS THE SPANISH TEACHER, DEENA WALLINGFORD AS THE GRADE THREE TEACHER, JEFF WALLINGFORD AS THE JUNIOR HIGH PRINCIPAL AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR.  THEY APPROVED THE TRANSFER OF TRACI UEHLIN FROM THE COMPUTER APPS TO THE JUNIOR HIGH MATH, CANDACE GAY FROM GRADE FOUR TO 5/6 COMPUTER APPS.  THEY APPROVED THE HIRING OF AMBER HORWART AS THE 5/6 READING.  THEN SATURDAY MORNING THE BOARD, STAFF AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS DETERMINED  THE 10 GENERAL GOALS COULD BE GROUPED INTO THREE.  RE-EVALUATE USD 211 FACILITY NEEDS, FUNDING, AND COLLABORATION WITH OTHER TAXING ENTITIES.  SUPERINTENDENT GREG MANN IS TO START THE PROCESS OF THE EVALUATION OF FACILITIES TO BOND ELECTION.  HE WILL BE WORKING FIRST ON IDENTIFYING GROUPS OR INDIVIDUALS WHO CAN DO A FACILITY EVALUATION AND TO MAKE THAT PRESENTATION TO THE BOARD FOR THE JUNE AND JULY MEETINGS.  THEY ALSO DREW UP A GENERAL TIMELINE FOR THE PROCESS.  A COMMITTEE WAS FORMED TO LOOK AT ALUMNI AND ENDOWMENT FUNDING.  THE BOARD WILL ALSO BE CONTACTING THE CHAMBER TO SET UP AND FACILITATE A JOINT MEETING OF THE NORTON COUNTY TAXING ENTITIES.  THE NEXT MEETING OF THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL BE MONDAY MAY 14TH AT 7:30 IN THE BOARD ROOM OF THE UNIFIED OFFICE.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
