Economic Development Notes

THE E-COMMUNITY APPLICATIONS AND HOUSING WERE ITEMS FOR THE NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD LAST NIGHT.  THE FIRST TWO APPLICATIONS WERE RECEIVED FOR LOANS FROM THE E-COMMUNITY.  THE LEADERSHIP TEAM REVIEWED THE APPLICATIONS AND SENT THEM ON TO THE FINANCIAL REVIEW BOARD.  THAT BOARD WILL MEET TODAY.  DIRECTOR SCOTT SPROUL STATED THE APPLICATIONS WERE COMPLETE AND THE FULL AMOUNT OF 45 THOUSAND DOLLARS EACH WILL BE RECOMMENDED.  THE HOUSING FOR THE COUNTY WAS DISCUSSED.  THE ALMENA CITY COUNCIL ADDRESSED THAT ISSUE AT THEIR MEETING LAST NIGHT.  NORTHWEST TECHNICAL COLLEGE IN GOODLAND IS PROPOSING TO BUILD A HOUSE AT THEIR CAMPUS AND THEN HAVE IT BROUGHT TO NORTON.  THE BOARD ALSO ADDRESSED AREAS IN NORTON THAT NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED.  THE COLBY COMMUNITY COLLEGE NORTON CAMPUS SHOULD BE OPEN FOR THEIR SUMMER CLASSES THE FIRST WEEK IN JUNE.  THE INSIDE IS MOSTLY DONE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE FLOORING.  THE SIDEWALK ON THE EAST SIDE HAS BEEN POURED.  THE KANSAS STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS APPROVED THE PLANS FOR THE DOCTOR LYONS HOUSE.  CONTRACTORS ARE WORKING ON THE WINDOWS AND WILL THEN WORK ON THE ROOF.  SPROUL ATTENDED A MEETING ON THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM.  THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SIDE OF THE PROGRAM WILL HAVE A NEW GRANT PROGRAM THAT IS BEING DEVELOPED FOR REHABILITATION OF BUILDINGS IN BLIGHTED DOWNTOWNS.  DETAILS ARE STILL BEING WORKED ON.  THE GRANTS WILL BE 250 THOUSAND DOLLARS OR LESS.  SPROUL WILL BE COORDINATING A MEETING WITH ALL THE TAXING ENTITIES IN NORTON COUNTY AFTER THE LEGISLATURE WRAPS UP THEIR SESSION.  THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS HAVE APPROVED GREG MANN TO STAY ON THE BOARD.  GAYLE JAMES, DEENA WENTE AND BRAD HOPKINS’ TERMS ARE UP.  SPROUL ALSO COMMENTED ON A PROGRAM BEING STARTED IN HAYS WHERE THEY SET UP A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION AND PROPERTY AND HOUSES CAN BE DONATED TO IT.  HE WILL KEEP THE BOARD UPDATED.  THE NEXT MEETING OF THE NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD WILL BE TUESDAY JUNE 12TH AT 5:30 IN THE OFFICE AT 205 SOUTH STATE STREET.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
