NORTON FFA MEMBER R.J. ELLIS COMPETED AGAINST FIVE OTHER DISTRICT STARS FOR THE STATE’S TOP HONOR OF STATE STAR IN AG PLACEMENT MAY 30-JUNE 1 AT THE 84TH KANSAS FFA CONVENTION ON THE KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS.  EACH YEAR, THE KANSAS FFA ASSOCIATION RECOGNIZES THE THREE FFA MEMBERS WHO HAVE THE TOP SUPERVISED AGRICULTURAL EXPERIENCE (SAE) PROGRAMS, WITH THE STAR FARMER, STAR IN AGRIBUSINESS AND STAR IN AG PLACEMENT AWARDS. THE STAR IN AG PLACEMENT AWARD IS SPONSORED BY THE KANSAS FARM BUREAU.  ELLIS’ SAE IS IN DIVERSIFIED AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION. HE WORKS ON HIS FAMILY’S OPERATION, DOUBLE E RANCH AND FARMS. THEIR ENTERPRISE CONSISTS OF 3000 ACRES OF FARMLAND AND 1000 ACRES OF CONSERVATION RESERVE PROGRAM (CRP) WASTELAND. ELLIS OPERATES THE TILLAGE DISK, RIPPER AND UNDERCUTTER IN PREPARATION FOR PLANTING SEASON. DURING HARVEST, HE COMBINES WHEAT, CORN AND SOYBEANS. ADDITIONALLY, ELLIS DRIVES THE GRAIN CART WHEN TRANSPORTING GRAIN TO THE ELEVATOR. FURTHERMORE, HE HELPS TO MAINTAIN THEIR HERD OF CATTLE BY CARING FOR THE GRASS AND PASTURE LAND AND OVERALL HERD HEALTH.  ELLIS PLANS TO ATTEND FORT SCOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE, MAJORING IN ANIMAL SCIENCE, AND HOPES TO BE ON THE LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM. THEN, HE PLANS TO TRANSFER TO KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY TO COMPLETE HIS BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN ANIMAL SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY. UPON GRADUATION, ELLIS HOPES TO CONTINUE TO WORK IN THE CATTLE INDUSTRY. ELLIS IS THE SON OF BROCK AND KIM ELLIS. HIS ADVISOR IS GARRET BEYDLER.
