School Board Notes

THE UPDATE ON THE ENERGY 360 PROJECT AND THE SUMMER PROJECTS WERE ITEMS FOR THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION LAST NIGHT. JOE HURLA FROM ENERGY 360 UPDATED THE BOARD ON THE PROJECTS THEY STARTED LAST YEAR. THEY ARE ABOUT 98 PER CENT DONE, BUT HIT A SNAG WITH SOME OF THE CONTROLS. THEY ARE WORKING ON THEM. HE ALSO PREPARED BIDS FOR THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AT THE EISENHOWER SCHOOL AND FOR THE HEATING AND VENTILATION SYSTEM AT THE AG SHOP. ONLY TWO BIDS WERE RECEIVED AND THEY WERE NOT LOCAL BIDDERS. THE DEADLINE WILL BE EXTENDED AND THE BOARD CAN ACT ON THE BIDS AT THE JUNE 29TH YEAR END MEETING. IN OTHER BUSINESS, SUPERINTENDENT GREG MANN REPORTED THE PORTABLE CLASSROOM BUILDING HAS BEEN DELIVERED. THERE WILL BE WORK DONE ON IT STARTING TOMORROW. THE OFFICES THAT ARE BEING RENOVATED INTO A CLASSROOM ARE BEING WORKED ON. THE PAINTING IS BEING DONE AT THE EAST CAMPUS AND THE STULL GYM. TREGO AND OSBORNE BANNERS WILL NOT BE INCLUDED BACK AND THE TMP ONE WILL BE ADDED NEXT YEAR. TREGO AND OSBORNE WILL BE LEAVING THE MID CONTINENT LEAGUE AT THE END OF THE 2012-13 SCHOOL YEAR. THE DISTRICT DID NOT MEET ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS IN 7TH GRADE MATH OR THE SPECIAL EDUCATION READING. THEY WILL BE ON WATCH FOR NEXT YEAR AND THEN WILL BE ON IMPROVEMENT STATUS THE YEAR AFTER IT THEY DO NOT MEET IT NEXT YEAR. THEN THE NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND WILL BE DONE. THE ENROLLMENT PACKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN MID JULY. THERE WILL BE MUST OF IT ON LINE AS WELL. THE BLUE CROSS/BLUE SHIELD PREMIUMS WILL INCREASE FIVE TO SEVEN PER CENT. THE INTERCOM SYSTEM IS IN IN THE JUNIOR/SENIOR HIGH AND EISENHOWER WILL BE NEXT. THE JULY MEETING WILL BE THE ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING ON THE 9TH AND THEN THEY WILL HOLD A SPECIAL MEETING ON THE 23RD TO GO OVER THE BUDGET. THE BOARD APPROVED THE REPUBLISHED FOOD SERVICE BUDGET. GUIDANCE COUNSELOR SHANE MILLER REPORTED THAT THE CLASS OF 2012 RECEIVED 163,590 DOLLARS IN SCHOLARSHIPS. THE OBERLIN STUDENTS DID A COMPARISON ON ACT SCORES AND SCORED HIGHER THAN FOUR OF FIVE SCHOOLS, EXCEPT FOR NORTON. THE BOARD ACCEPTED THE BID FROM INSURANCE PLANNING OF HAYS FOR THE DISTRICT’S PROPERTY, INLAND MARINE, WORKMEN’S COMP, LIABILITY AND AUTO INSURANCE FOR 96,181 DOLLARS. THEY ALSO ACCEPTED THE BID FROM THE JIM GILL AGENCY FOR THE STUDENT ACCIDENT COVERAGE FOR 19,749 DOLLARS. THE STUDENT-PARENT HANDBOOKS WERE APPROVED AS PRESENTED LAST MONTH. THE BOARD APPROVED THE CONTINUED PARTICIPATION IN THE TWO HEAD STARTS AND THE SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAM. THE STUDENT MEAL PRICES WILL BE INCREASING BY 10 CENTS PER LUNCH. THE ADULT MEAL PRICES WILL BE SET LATER. THE BOOK RENTAL AND ENROLLMENT FEES WERE APPROVED. THE MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT RATE FOR EMPLOYEES USING THEIR OWN VEHICLES FOR SCHOOL BUSINESS WAS SET AT 26 CENTS PER MILE. THE MILEAGE REIMBURSEMENT RATE FOR PARENTS WHO TRANSPORT THEIR KIDS TO SCHOOL WAS SET AT THE PREVAILING I.R.S. REIMBURSEMENT RATE. THE THREE STUDENT MEMBERS FOR THE STULL GYM APPRECIATION PLAQUE COMMITTEE OF ANDREW ELLIS, RHEANON BAKER, AND CODY ELLIS WERE APPROVED. SUPERINTENDENT GREG MANN WAS TO CONTACT THREE OF THE SIX ADULTS IDENTIFIED BY THE BOARD TO SEE WHICH THREE ARE WILLING TO SERVE. THE BOARD WILL HEAR PRESENTATIONS FROM BONDING COMPANIES AND ARCHITECTS IN THE COMING MONTHS AS PER THE STRATEGIC PLAN. IN PERSONNEL ACTION ITEMS, THE BOARD ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF TODD FULTON AS THE JUNIOR HIGH LANGUAGE ARTS, AND CINDY VOSS AS THE EISENHOWER COMPUTER LAB AIDE. THEY APPROVED OFFERING CONTRACTS TO JENNIFER RUDER FOR EISENHOWER VOCAL MUSIC, HEATHER PETERSON FOR HIGH SCHOOL LANGUAGE ARTS, KRISTINA SANDER FOR THE EISENHOWER SECRETARY AND LINDA BUDGE FOR EISENHOWER COMPUTER LAB AIDE. THEY APPROVED THE TRANSFER OF AMIE BURGE FROM FIRST GRADE TO JUNIOR HIGH LANGUAGE ARTS. THE NEXT MEETING OF THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL BE FRIDAY JUNE 29TH AT SEVEN A.M. FOR THE YEAR END MEETING. THE NEXT REGULAR MEETING WILL BE JULY 9TH AT 7:30 IN THE BOARD ROOM OF THE UNIFIED OFFICE. ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
