THE UPDATE ON ACTIVITIES AND THE ELECTION OF OFFICERS WERE ITEMS FOR THE NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD LAST NIGHT.  THE COLBY COMMUNITY COLLEGE NORTON CAMPUS IS OPEN AND  THEY HAVE 30 NURSING STUDENTS IN THEIR DAY AND EVENING CLASSES.  THE BUILDING WILL ALSO BE USED FOR OTHER CLASSES FROM THE SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER STARTING AFTER THE WEB DESIGN CLASS NEXT WEEK.  THEY ARE PERMITTED TO HAVE UP TO 50 NURSING STUDENTS AND THAT WILL BE COMING IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS.  THE FOUNDATION WORK IS BEING DONE ON THE DOCTOR LYON’S HOUSE AND THEN AN APPLICATION WILL BE FILED FOR ADDITIONAL FUNDING TO COMPLETE THE OUTSIDE.  THEN THE NORTON COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION WILL BE CONSULTED TO SEE WHAT THE BUILDING WILL BECOME.  NORTON COUNTY IS TIED FOR THE MOST APPLICATIONS FOR THE RURAL OPPORTUNITY ZONE OR ROZ PROGRAM.  NINE HAVE BEEN APPROVED. 8 ARE PENDING AND TWO HAVE BEEN DENIED.  NORTON COUNTY IS TIED WITH THOMAS AND KIOWA COUNTIES FOR THE APPLICATIONS.  INFORMATION ABOUT OUR SUCCESS WILL BE FORWARDED TO THE GOVERNOR FOR A SPEECH HE WILL BE MAKING THIS WEEKEND.  THE BOARD DISCUSSED THE KANSAS HOUSING RESOURCES CORPORATION AND THEN REQUESTS FOR PROPOSALS FOR MODERATE INCOME HOUSING.  A PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD LATER THIS MONTH IN COLBY TO GET MORE INFORMATION AND TO MAKE SUGGESTIONS.  2.75 MILLION DOLLARS HAS BEEN ALLOCATED FOR THE PROGRAM WITH THE TOP AWARD OF 400 THOUSAND DOLLARS.  THE MAJOR TAXING ENTITIES IN NORTON COUNTY WILL BE MEETING IN JULY TO START THE DISCUSSION ON  NEEDS FOR THOSE ENTITIES IN THE NEXT 10 TO 15 YEARS.  DIRECTOR SCOTT SPROUL SHOWED SOME OF THE BRANDING AND MARKETING STRATEGIES FOR THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT THAT CAN BE CUSTOMIZED FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL CITY AS WELL.  HE SHOWED SOME POSSIBLE COMMERCIALS TO PROMOTE NORTON COUNTY AND ALL THE GREAT THINGS ABOUT LIVING HERE.  EACH COMMUNITY WOULD HAVE THEIR OWN BRAND, BUT A COLLECTIVE LOOK.   AARON HERMAN WAS RE-ELECTED AS THE CHAIRMAN.  BRAD HOPKINS AS THE VICE CHAIR, DEENA WENTE SECRETARY AND BARB BROOKS TREASURER.  THE MEETING TIMES HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO 5:45 ON THE SECOND TUESDAY OF EACH MONTH.  THE NEXT MEETING OF THE NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD WILL BE TUESDAY JULY 10TH AT 5:45 IN THE OFFICE AT 205 SOUTH STATE STREET.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
