School Board Notes

THE ORGANIZATION OF THE BOARD WAS THE MAJOR AGENDA ITEM FOR THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION LAST NIGHT. APRIL KARNOPP WAS APPOINTED AS THE PRESIDENT WITH CHRIS HARTING AS THE VICE PRESIDENT. JANICE RUSSELL IS THE CLERK AND CYNTHIA GLENNEMEIER THE TREASURER. THE SCHOOL YEAR IS SET AT 1,116 HOURS. THE DONATION TO THE ARTS COUNCIL WAS APPROVED. THE MEETING DATES, TIMES AND LOCATION WAS SET AS THE 2ND MONDAY OF EACH MONTH, AT 7:30 IN THE BOARD ROOM OF THE UNIFIED OFFICE WITH A FOUR HOUR TIME LIMIT. THE HOME RULE RESOLUTION WAS PASSED AS WELL AS THE ENFORCEMENT OF CITY AND COUNTY LAWS. KARNOPP WAS RE-APPOINTED AS THE REPRESENTATIVE TO THE NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS SPECIAL EDUCATION CO-OP AS WELL AS THE KASB GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS COMMITTEE, CRAIG RENNER TO THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL, AND BILL JONES TO THE CURRICULUM COORDINATING COUNCIL. THE BOARD REVIEWED THE CHANGES MADE TO THE PERSONNEL AND THE EMPLOYEE HANDBOOKS. THEY WILL BE REVIEWED UNTIL THE JULY 23RD SPECIAL MEETING. THE JOINT MEETING OF THE NORTON COUNTY TAXING ENTITIES WILL BE NEXT WEDNESDAY AT PRAIRIELAND ELECTRIC. THE BOARD APPROVED THE MEMBERSHIP IN THE SCHOOLS FOR FAIR FUNDING. THERE WERE NO OUT OF DISTRICT TRANSPORTATION REQUESTS. THE LEGISLATURE CHANGED THE RULES THAT ALLOWED OTHER DISTRICTS INTO A HOME DISTRICT IF THE LEARNING CENTER FOR THAT STUDENT IS OVER 2 AND A HALF MILES AWAY. THE CREDIT CARD LIMITS WERE APPROVED WITH AUTHORIZATION GIVEN TO THE SUPERINTENDENT TO GET TWO MORE CARDS. THE FIRST STATE BANK WILL HAVE THE DISTRICT’S CHECKING ACCOUNT THIS YEAR AND IDLE FUNDS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED ACCORDING TO BOARD POLICY. SEVERAL OF THE PROJECTS FOR THE SUMMER ARE COMPLETE INCLUDING THE JUNIOR HIGH GYM FLOOR, CARPET AND TILE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, HAND RAILS FOR THE VISITORS SIDE OF TRAVIS FIELD, MADE BY GARRETT BEYDLER, THE STULL AND EAST CAMPUS GYMS PAINTED, THE MODULAR HOME SET UP BY EISENHOWER, THE INTERCOM AND CLOCKS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED. THERE ARE STILL SOME TO GO INCLUDING THE CLASSROOM AT EISENHOWER, THE DOORS FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL ENTRY AND ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE STULL GYM, THE STULL GYM FLOOR, THE VENTILATION SYSTEM AT EISENHOWER AND AT THE AG SHOP AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. THE ENROLLMENT POSTCARDS WILL BE SENT TO PATRONS IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS TO ALLOW THEM TO PICK UP THEIR ENROLLMENT PACKETS AT THE UNIFIED OFFICE. THE BOARD WILL HOLD A SPECIAL MEETING ON JULY 23RD TO GO OVER THE BUDGET. THE NEXT REGULAR MEETING WILL BE AUGUST 13TH. BOTH MEETINGS ARE AT 7:30 IN THE BOARD ROOM OF THE UNIFIED OFFICE AND ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
