School Board Notes

THE BUDGET HEARING AND THE STULL GYM PLAQUE RECOMMENDATION WERE ITEMS FOR THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION LAST NIGHT.  THE BOARD HELD THE BUDGET HEARING FOR THE PUBLIC TO COMMENT.  THE GENERAL BUDGET WILL REMAIN THE SAME, BUT THE MILL LEVY FOR THE LOCAL OPTION BUDGET WILL INCREASE .22 OF A MILL.   THE THREE MILLS FOR THE NORTON RECREATION COMMISSION WERE ALSO INCLUDED.  NO ONE APPEARED TO COMMENT SO THE BUDGET WAS APPROVED AS PUBLISHED.  ALSO LAST NIGHT, THE BOARD HEARD THE RECOMMENDATION OF DAVID STUEWE TO RECEIVE THE NOMINATION TO HAVE HIS NAME ADDED TO THE STULL GYM APPRECIATION PLAQUE POSTHUMOUSLY.  THE CONTRACT FOR AUDITING SERVICES WITH MAPES AND MILLER FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS WAS APPROVED.  SUPERINTENDENT GREG MANN REPORTED THAT 428 CARDS WERE SENT TO PATRONS LETTING THEM KNOW THE ENROLLMENT PACKETS COULD BE PICKED UP AT THE UNIFIED OFFICE.  387 WERE PICKED UP.  NEXT YEAR, THE DISTRICT WILL PUT A COUNTER ON THE WEBSITE TO GAUGE HOW MAY WERE DOWNLOADING THE INFORMATION OF THE DISTRICT’S WEBSITE.  THE ENERGY 360 PROJECT IS COMPLETE AND THEY ARE NOW HELPING WITH THE VENTILATION AT THE EISENHOWER GYM AND THE AG SHOP AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.  ROUGH NUMBERS FOR ENROLLMENT SHOWED LAST YEAR AT THE END OF THE ENROLLMENT WEEK WITH 694 STUDENTS.  THIS YEAR 688.  THERE HAS ALSO BEEN THREE NEW ONES SIGNED UP AT EISENHOWER AND ONE AT THE JUNIOR HIGH YESTERDAY.  SUPERINTENDENT MANN ADDRESSED THE WAIVER THE STATE RECEIVED FROM THE NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.  THERE WILL BE THREE THINGS DISTRICTS WILL HAVE TO DO WITH THIS WAIVER, INCLUDING A NEW ACCREDITATION SYSTEM, CHANGE THE WAY STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IS DETERMINED BY INDIVIDUAL INSTEAD OF GROUP AND HAVE A NEW EVALUATION SYSTEM FOR THE TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATION.  THAT EVALUATION HAS TO BE DONE BEFORE NEGOTIATIONS LATER THIS YEAR.  THERE ARE SEVERAL MODELS TO LOOK AT AND THEN ONE WILL HAVE TO BE CHOSEN OR THE NORTON DISTRICT CAN DO ONE ON THEIR OWN, FOLLOWING THE RECOMMENDATIONS.  THERE WILL ALSO BE A CHANGE IN THE MEALS SERVED THIS YEAR WITH MORE EMPHASIS ON NUTRITION, WHICH WILL MEAN MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.  SUPERINTENDENT MANN WILL BE MEETING WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF THE BELOIT VO-TECH AND NATOMA CORPORATION ABOUT VOCATIONAL CLASSES.  MANN WILL ALSO BE HEARING A PRESENTATION ON HEALTH INSURANCE.  THE BOARD ALSO HEARD A PRESENTATION FROM ARCHITECTURAL FIRM OF JONES, GILLIAM AND RENZ.  THE BOARD MAY BE MEETING WITH A BONDING COMPANY FOR A NOON MEETING IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS.  THE NEXT MEETING OF THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL BE MONDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH AT 7:30 IN THE BOARD ROOM OF THE UNIFIED OFFICE.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
