ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT NOTES 8/15/12 DW

THE UPDATE ON THE 2012 LEGISLATIVE SESSION WAS THE MAJOR AGENDA ITEM FOR THE NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD LAST NIGHT. DOUG SMITH FROM PINEGAR, SMITH AND ASSOCIATES PRESENTED AN UPDATE ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE 2012 SESSION AND THEIR IMPACT ON NORTON COUNTY. THEY INCLUDED LEGISLATIVE VISITS THAT WERE HELD IN NORTON COUNTY, THE HELP WITH THE KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION GRANT APPLICATION FOR THE AG VALLEY PROJECT, THE HOME OWNED CARNIVAL LEGISLATION, THE NORTON CORRECTIONAL FACILITY AND THEIR BUDGET. THE FIRM ALSO HELPED WITH A SUCCESSFUL APPEAL OF A DENIED APPLICATION FOR A PROJECT EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE FROM THE KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE FOR THE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS AND GIFT STORE. HE ALSO ADDRESSED THE MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT EXEMPTION EXPANSION AND THE AFFECT ON NORTON COUNTY. SMITH ALSO PRESENTED A LOOK AT WHAT THE 2013 KANSAS LEGISLATURE WILL LOOK LIKE. A VAST MAJORITY OF THE SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES WILL BE REPUBLICAN. HE SHOWED PIE CHARTS OF WHERE THE MONEY IS SPENT IN THE STATE WITH THE MAJORITY OF IT GOING TO EDUCATION. HE TALKED ABOUT THE GOVERNOR’S ROAD MAP FOR KANSAS PRIORITIES WHICH INCLUDE GROW THE KANSAS ECONOMY, REFORM STATE GOVERNMENT, EXCEL IN EDUCATION AND PROTECT KANSAS FAMILIES. SMITH SAYS THAT KANSAS RESIDENTS CAN EXPECT MORE LOCAL TAXPAYER FUNDING OF SCHOOLS IN THE COMING YEARS AS WELL AS FURTHER REFORM OF THE STATE’S TAX STRUCTURE. SMITH WILL BE PLANNING SEVERAL MORE LEGISLATIVE VISITS WITH THE NEW REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS COMING TO TOPEKA. IN OTHER BUSINESS LAST NIGHT, DIRECTOR SCOTT SPROUL REPORTED THERE IS A DEVELOPER INTERESTED IN BUILDING DUPLEXES IN NORTON. THEY ARE WORKING ON SECURING LAND FOR THE PROPOSED BUILDING. SPROUL WILL BE GOING TO THE NORTON CITY COUNCIL TONIGHT TO ASK FOR THE CITY’S HELP WITH THE PROJECT. THE APPLICATION FOR THE KANSAS HOUSING RESOURCES CORPORATION MODERATE INCOME HOUSING APPLICATION WILL BE SUBMITTED BY THE END OF THE MONTH DEADLINE. THE NORTHWEST KANSAS PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION IS ASSISTING WITH THE APPLICATION. THE NEXT MEETING OF THE NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD WILL BE TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 11TH AT 5:45 IN THE OFFICE AT 205 SOUTH STATE STREET. ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
