Norton City Council Notes

THE FORUM FOR THE PUBLIC MEETING AND THE ORDINANCES WERE ITEMS FOR THE NORTON CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT.  JILL LIVELY MADE SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR THE COUNCIL TO CONDUCT THE MEETING TONIGHT IN AN INFORMATIONAL WAY, NOT A DEBATE ON THE POOL ISSUE.  THE MEETING IS TO GET INFORMATION OUT TO THOSE THAT ARE STILL UNDECIDED OR HAVE QUESTIONS.  RICK ENSZ FROM COOPER MALONE MCCLAIN THE BOND UNDERWRITERS AND KEVIN MCLAYEA FROM AQUATIC DESIGN WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE TO INFORM THE PUBLIC ABOUT THOSE ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT.  COUNCIL MEMBER JERRY MORITZ WILL BE LEADING THE FORUM TONIGHT AT 6:30 AT PRAIRIE LAND ELECTRIC.  ALSO LAST NIGHT, THE COUNCIL APPROVED THE THIRD READING OF THE ORDINANCE TO VACATE A PORTION OF VALLEY DRIVE AND ADOPTED IT.  THAT SECTION OF LAND WILL NOW GO TO THE ADJACENT PROPERTY OWNERS.  THE THIRD READING OF THE ORDINANCE TO DESIGNATE EMERGENCY SNOW ROUTES AND REPEAL THE PRIMARY ROUTES WAS APPROVED AND THE ORDINANCE ADOPTED WITH RON BRIERY VOTING NO.  THIS WILL NOT CHANGE THE WAY THE CITY CLEANS THE STREETS DURING SNOW STORMS, JUST RENAMES SOME OF THE STREETS TO EMERGENCY INSTEAD OF PRIMARY.  THE SECOND READING OF THE ORDINANCE PROHIBITING VEHICLE PARKING ON SOUTH FIRST NEAR LAS CANTERAS WAS APPROVED.  THE SECOND READING OF THE ORDINANCES REQUIRING LIABILITY INSURANCE FOR BUILDERS, CONTRACTORS, ALL PLUMBERS AND ALL ELECTRICIANS WAS APPROVED.  ALSO LAST NIGHT, THE COUNCIL WAS INTRODUCED TO NEW ASSISTANT POLICE CHIEF MICHELLE SHANNON.  SHE STARTED WORK IN THE CITY ON MONDAY.  THE CITY OF NORTON WAS THE RECIPIENT OF A 400 THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT FOR THE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT WEST OF THE COMMONS.  ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WILL ADMINISTER THE GRANT.  THE CITY IS WORKING TO GET THE SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR THAT PROJECT.  THE SURVEYOR WILL BE IN NORTON TOMORROW TO GET THE LAND STAKED OUT AND THEN PENCO ENGINEERING WILL BE IN NORTON TO DO THE ELEVATION WORK.  A REQUEST WAS RECEIVED FROM ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FOR 10 THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT IN THAT AREA FROM THE HANSEN GRANT.  THE NORTON LIONS CLUB WILL BE ASSISTING WITH THAT AS WELL.  THE CONTRACT WITH PRAIRIE LAND ELECTRIC TO PURCHASE POWER SHOULD BE COMING IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.  THE UPDATE ON CHAMBER ACTIVITIES INCLUDING THE WINNERS CIRCLE, THE WIN IT ALL FALL PROMOTION, AND A PREVIEW OF THE CHRISTMAS PROMOTION.  THE TRAVEL AND TOURISM IS LOOKING AT WAYS TO HELP PROMOTE NORTON COUNTY.  THE COUNCIL PUT A 250 THOUSAND DOLLAR PRICE TAG ON THE NUMBER 9 ENGINE.  THE FUEL TANKS AT THE AIRPORT ARE IN AND THE CALIBRATION WILL BE DONE NEXT ON THE EQUIPMENT.  UPCOMING MEETINGS ARE PERSONNEL NEXT WEDNESDAY AT 4:30, PUBLIC SAFETY NOVEMBER 5TH AT 5:15 WITH PUBLIC WORKS FOLLOWING.  ALL MEETINGS ARE HELD IN CITY HALL AND ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
