School Board Notes

THE PROPOSAL FOR I-PADS FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AS WELL AS THE WELLNESS CURRICULUM WERE ITEMS FOR THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION LAST NIGHT.  THE BOARD DISCUSSED THE PROPOSAL FOR GETTING I-PADS FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AND SLOWING DOING AWAY WITH THE LAPTOPS CARTS FOR STUDENTS.  THE TEACHERS WILL KEEP LAPTOPS.  TECHNOLOGY COORDINATOR KEITH HOUSER AND SUPERINTENDENT GREG MANN PRESENTED A PROPOSAL THAT SHOWED THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE I-PADS AND THE TIMELINE FOR CLASSES TO GET THEM.  THEY PROPOSED STARTING WITH THE FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADE NEXT SEMESTER AND THEN EXPANDING THEM NEXT YEAR.  THE DISTRICT WOULD LEASE THE I-PADS FOR THREE YEARS.  AT THE END, THEY CAN BUY THEM FOR A DOLLAR EACH, TURN THEM BACK IN, OR UPGRADE.  THE STUDENTS WOULD CHECK OUT THE I-PADS.  130 WOULD BE LEASED IN DECEMBER WITH THE TEACHERS GETTING THEIR I-PADS SOONER SO THEY CAN LEARN ABOUT THEM.  THE STUDENT MODELS WOULD BE INSTITUTIONAL MODELS AND THEN CANNOT INSTALL ANY APPLICATIONS ON THEM.  THEY WOULD BE READY FOR THE STUDENTS ALREADY WITH THE APPS NEEDED.  THE BOARD APPROVED THE PURCHASE.  IF THE PILOT IS SUCCESSFUL, THE BOARD WILL BE PRESENTED WITH A PROPOSAL IN THE SPRING TO EXPAND IT TO GRADES 7 THROUGH 12 FOR THE 2013-14 SCHOOL YEAR WITH A CLASSROOM SET BEING MADE AVAILABLE TO EACH GRADE LEVEL IN ONE THROUGH FOUR.  THE COST IS 70,749, WHICH IS WHAT IS SPENT EACH YEAR ON TECHNOLOGY FOR COMPUTERS.  ALSO LAST NIGHT, JOAN BOLT PRESENTED AN UPDATE ON THE WELLNESS CURRICULUM.  SHE TALKED ABOUT THE RED OUT THAT IS SET FOR NOVEMBER 30TH TO INVOLVED THE COMMUNITY AND THE SCHOOL. IT IS A FUND RAISER FOR THE HEART ASSOCIATION WITH MANY COMMUNITY GROUPS GETTING TOGETHER TO TEACH ABOUT HEALTHY LIVING INCLUDING THE EMS DOING BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS, THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT WITH HANDOUTS ON HEALTHY LIVING AND APPLES FORM THE TWO LOCAL GROCERY STORES.  THE POST PROM WILL HAVE A POTATO BAR AND PART OF THEIR PROCEEDS FROM THEIR 50/50 GOING TO THE HEART ASSOCIATION.  THE BAND, DANCE TEAM AND CHEERLEADERS WILL ALL HAVE RED T-SHIRTS THANKS TO THE FOUR OF THE FIVE LOCAL BANKS AND THE NORTON RECREATION COMMISSION.  PLAYERS WILL HAVE RED SHOELACES THAT WERE PURCHASED AT COST AT ENDZONE.  GOODLAND WILL BE PLAYING BASKETBALL IN NORTON AND HAS BEEN INVITED TO PARTICIPATE AS WELL.  EACH OF THE SCHOOLS WILL BE SELLING RED T-SHIRTS TO WEAR TO THE GAME AND THEY WILL BE AVAILABLE THERE AS WELL.  THE SCHOOL NURSE WILL ALSO BE AT THE RED OUT WITH INFORMATION.  IN OTHER BUSINESS, SUPERINTENDENT MANN ADDRESSED THE MESSAGE BOARD AT THE JUNIOR/SENIOR HIGH.  THE BOARD WAS INSTALLED IN 2000 AND SOME OF THE EQUIPMENT HAS BECOME ANTIQUATED AND HARD TO FIND PARTS.  THE BOARD ASKED FOR MORE INFORMATION BEFORE MAKING A DECISION.  THE BOARD ACCEPTED THE APPLICATION FROM BILL JOHNSON FOR THE RECREATION COMMISSION BOARD OF DIRECTORS.  THE BOARD APPROVED THE MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH THE ARCHITECT AND BONDING COMPANIES.  THEY ALSO APPROVED THE FORMAT OF THE FACILITIES REVIEW COMMISSION AND EACH BOARD MEMBER WILL PROVIDE A COUPLE OF NAMES FOR POSSIBLE INCLUDING ON THE STEERING COMMITTEE.  THEY WILL MEET MONTHLY STARTING JANUARY 21ST.  THE BOARD REVIEWED THE PURPOSE OF THE USD 211 LEARNING CENTER.  IT IS NOT AN ALTERNATIVE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO DON’T WANT TO ATTEND THEIR REGULAR SCHOOL.  IT IS GEARED TOWARD THOSE WHO DROPPED OUT, ARE OVER 18 AND THEIR CLASS HAS ALREADY GRADUATED.  THERE IS A LIST OF REQUIREMENTS FOR ATTENDING THE LEARNING CENTER AND THE BOARD FELT THEY WERE ACCEPTABLE THE WAY THEY ARE.  THE NEXT MEETING OF THE USD 211 NORTON BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL BE MONDAY DECEMBER 10TH AT 7:30 IN THE BOARD ROOM OF THE UNIFIED OFFICE.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
