THE GRANTS FOR THE DESTINATION BUSINESS BOOT CAMP AND THE GROUND BREAKING FOR THE NORTON ESTATES WERE ITEMS FOR THE NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD LAST NIGHT.  THE E-COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP TEAM MET YESTERDAY TO REVIEW THE APPLICATIONS RECEIVED FOR THE JON SHALLERT DESTINATION BUSINESS BOOT CAMP COMING UP IN MARCH IN COLORADO.  THE TEAM APPROVED THE GRANTS GOING TO STUDIO 111, ELEVEN AND TWO FROM STITCH UP A STORM.  THEIR REGISTRATION FEES WILL BE COVERED.  THEY WILL THEN BE REQUIRED TO REPORT ON WHAT THEY LEARNED.  THIS BOOT CAMP IS DESIGNED TO HELP BUSINESSES INCREASE SALES, HELP WITH MARKETING, DISPLAY TIPS AND WAYS TO UPSELL WHEN CUSTOMERS ARE IN THEIR BUSINESSES.  ALSO, THE GROUNDBREAKING FOR THE NORTON ESTATES LLC WILL BE (WAS) AT ONE THIS AFTERNOON.  THE BASEMENTS ARE BEING DUG ALREADY AND THEY PLAN TO HAVE THE DUPLEXES BUILT BY THE FALL OF 2013.  THE CITY OF NORTON, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND THE FRONTIER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HELPED WITH THIS PROJECT.  BAINTER CONSTRUCTION OF HOXIE WILL BE THE GENERAL CONTRACTOR AND THE OWNER OF THE ESTATES.  THE GROUND WAS DONATED BY DON AND CAROL RYAN.  THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT DOWNTOWN HISTORICAL GRANT WILL BE PUT ON HOLD.  THE SIDLES BUILDING WAS BEING LOOKED AT FOR THE GRANT, BUT THE BUSINESS THAT WAS GOING TO GO IN THE BUILDING IS NOW GOING IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION.  THE SECOND ROUND FOR THAT GRANT WILL BE COMING UP IN AUGUST.  AARON HERMAN, CURTIS EVELEIGH, BUD POSSON AND GREG MANN WILL BE MEETING AS A COMMITTEE TO STUDY THE ISSUE OF CHARGING FOR SOME OF THE GRANTS THAT ARE FILLED OUT BY THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.  24 APPLICATIONS HAVE BEEN APPROVED FOR THE RURAL OPPORTUNITY ZONE FOR NORTON COUNTY.  THAT IS THE MOST IN THE STATE.  IT HELPS STUDENTS WHO MOVE TO NORTON PAY BACK THEIR STUDENT LOANS AND ALSO HELPS THOSE MOVING IN TO NORTON COUNTY WITH AN EXEMPTION FROM THE STATE TAXES.  THERE ARE JUST OVER TWO MORE THAT CAN BE FUNDED IN NORTON COUNTY.  THE BOARD HEARD THE AGENDA THAT WILL BE PUSHED BY THE WESTERN KANSAS RURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, THE KANSAS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND THE KANSAS LEGISLATIVE POLICY GROUP INCLUDING A PUSH FOR CONTINUED FUNDING FOR THE KANSAS HOUSING RESOURCES THAT APPROVED THE 400 THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT FOR THE NORTON ESTATES.   THE BOARD ADDRESSED WORKING WITH JACQUE BECKMAN FROM NEX-TECH AND PASTY MADDY FROM THE TWIN CREEKS EXTENSION DISTRICT ON WAYS TO GET YOUTH OF ALL AGES INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES.  THE NEXT PROMOTING NORTON COUNTY EVENT WILL BE NEXT WEDNESDAY FROM TEN TILL ONE WITH THE SECRETARY OF THE KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION MIKE KING.  THE ALMENA CITY COUNCIL IS LOOKING AT HOUSING FOR THEIR CITY AND ARE LOOKING FOR A CONTRACTOR TO BUILDING A COUPLE OF DUPLEXES IN ALMENA.  THE BOARD APPROVED THE NEW CONTRACT WITH DIRECTOR SCOTT SPROUL.  THE NEXT MEETING OF THE NORTON CITY COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD WILL BE TUESDAY FEBRUARY 12TH AT 5:45 IN THE OFFICE AT 205 SOUTH STATE STREET.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
