NEARLY ALL 35 MEMBERS OF THE USD 211 NORTON FACILITY STEERING COMMITTEE WAS IN ATTENDANCE LAST NIGHT FOR THEIR FIRST MEETING.  THE MEETING CONSISTED OF AN OVERVIEW OF WHAT THE COMMITTEE WILL BE DOING, WHY IT WAS FORMED AND HOW THEY GOT TO THIS POINT.  SUPERINTENDENT GREG MANN PRESENTED THE OVERVIEW OF THE DISTRICT.  HE ALSO PRESENTED THE INFORMATION ON THE NORTON SCHOOLS INCLUDING THE FINANCIAL INFORMATION ABOUT STATE AID, CAPITAL OUTLAY, THE NUMBERS OF FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH PARTICIPANTS, AND SHOWED PROJECTIONS FOR ENROLLMENT IN THE FUTURE.  HE SHOWED THE FORMULA USED TO CALCULATE THE ENROLLMENT NUMBERS FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS.  HE GAVE THE PARTICIPANTS THE OVERVIEW OF THE SURVEY TAKEN A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO BY THE DOCKING INSTITUTE.  THE WHOLE SURVEY RESULTS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE DISTRICT’S WEBSITE.  IT SHOWED THAT THE NORTON COMMUNITY IS VERY SUPPORTIVE OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE JOB BEING DONE.  THEY ALSO NOTED THAT THE BUILDINGS COULD USE UPGRADES AND THAT IS WHERE THIS FACILITY STEERING COMMITTEE COMES IN.  THE SCHOOL BOARD MET WITH THREE DIFFERENT ARCHITECTURAL FIRMS LAST YEAR AND SELECTED THE FIRM OF SCHAEFER, JOHNSON, COX, FREY ARCHITECTURE.  GLENN STRAIT FROM COLBY WORKS WITH THIS FIRM AND WILL BE HELPING WITH THE NORTON PROJECT.  STRAIT AND TWO OTHER ARCHITECTS MET WITH THE SCHOOL STAFF YESTERDAY AND THEY WERE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT THEIR BUILDINGS AND THE NEEDS THEY SEE FOR IMPROVEMENTS.  THE ARCHITECTS BOTH SAID THE STAFF IS HAPPY WITH THE BUILDINGS AND ROOMS THEY HAVE AND ARE DOING WHAT THEY CAN WITH THEM.  THE STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS WERE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT ISSUES THEY SEE ARE IMPORTANT DEALING WITH THE DISTRICT AND FACILITIES.  WITH A POSSIBLE INCREASE IN STUDENTS IN THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS, THERE WILL NEED TO BE SOME CHANGES AND EVEN SOME ON THE OUTSIDE.  THE ARCHITECTS WILL NOW TAKE THOSE SUGGESTIONS BACK TO WICHITA AND PUT THEM IN TO A SUMMARY FORM AND PRESENT IT BACK TO THE COMMITTEE.  AT THE NEXT MEETING THE COMMITTEE WILL TOUR THE EISENHOWER SCHOOL AND SEE WHAT THE NEEDS ARE.  THAT MEETING WILL BE THURSDAY FEBRUARY 21ST AT SEVEN WITH A TOUR AT 6:30 AT THE EISENHOWER SCHOOL.  ALL MEETINGS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
